Odensee snowshoe walk

Schneebericht
Relatively speaking, it’s not that cold. It’s about -7C, but it’s very gray and a bit damp. And it’s snowing, has been on and off for three days now. Tomorrow, it’s supposed to get heavier and the wind is supposed to pick up, so it was key to get out today.

I drove up the the Odensee, a small lake with a park and nature reserve not too far from where we live. There’s a trail there that runs around the lake. It’s shared by skiiers and walkers, though at various places there are little spurs for walkers only. The walking track leaves the main route and goes into the woods, crossing over little wooden bridges and skirting the edge of the lake.

The whole way round is about 5k. I couldn’t tell you how long it took me but I can tell you that I set out at a pretty fast clip, not because I’m fast, but because it was f**king freezing. It took me a good half hour to get warm enough so that my fingers didn’t hurt anymore.

It was dead quiet in there. January is a pretty slow month for tourism hereabouts and even at the Kohlrosenhutte, the gasthaus at the trailhead, it was mighty quiet. I saw a handful of skiers when my path crossed the ski route, but mostly it was just me and the wind.

I turned the heat on high in the car and when I got back home, I took a bath. Then, I was finally warm again.
