Talk to Her

August 18, 2005 – 7:20 am | by nerd's eye view

I am not sure that protest of this type really effects change. After all, she’s been in the driveway for a while now and it’s not like he’s headed out there to talk to her. I still think it’s worthwhile. This is just me talking but I know that I get really lonely when I read the news and I see what kind of policy is being set and how the administration is acting. Then, I go to something like this little neighborhood vigil and I think to myself, “Oh, good. Good. All around me are people who care.”

Sign in photo on the left: “Before one more mother’s child is lost.”

If I was a Bush flunky, I’d be taking him aside and giving him a very short statement. Then I’d put him on his bicycle and send him out there. Here’s what I’d have him say: “Look, Ms. Sheehan, you and I are never going to see eye to eye on policy around this. Nothing I can say to you will ever make sense because we are not in agreement about the neccessity of this war. However, I do want to tell you that I am very sorry for your loss and your grief and I am proud to have had your son be part of the US military.”

Something like that isn’t going to make Cindy Sheehan feel any better. But - and may god forgive me for even suggesting something that could improve the president’s standing - it would make the President seem a lot less of a senseless clod.
