BlogHer Site Launches Jan 30
January 30, 2006 – 2:18 am | by nerd's eye viewWelcome to Nerd's Eye View. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Want to know more about this site? See the Meet the Nerd page. And thanks for reading!
I’m sure I’ve already posted that I’m the Euro-editor for BlogHer’s new site. For the past two weeks or so, (along with 20 or so other women around the world) I’ve been peering into the corners of the internet, clicking through blogrolls, and posting to the BlogHer beta site. I’m posting under World:Europe. Check it out.
Here is what I have learned over the past two weeks of trying on this editorial gig.
- Whew, I am so not up to the task. Europe. Lots of langagues. Complex politics. Geography. It’s all over the place. And me with true fluency only in English! I used to fancy myself quite the polyglot, and I guess I used to be, but no more. Nope.
- Man, I sure loves me some newsroom. I read some story or see some clip on the news, then I go find out what people are saying about it. Then, I write some stuff about it. Love that.
- You would not believe the number of people who married handsome guy/gorgeous gal from [country name] and now live in a tiny town that you never heard of. I thought I was the only one. Silly me. Ha.
- I have absolutely identifiable preferences around what I want to read and why I like it. Gender is so not one of them. Hmm. This is maybe a handicap in my role as BlogHer editor, I do not know.
- People are linkers or they’re not. I’m not really one. So it is weird for me to rely on others and their linkiness. But I’m thankful to them. People like it a lot, it seems, when you link to them. Maybe I need to be more community minded around this.
- I still wish I lived in Paris.
The BlogHer conference is in July in San Jose, California. We should be stateside then, so I hope to attend. Watch this space for some silly fundraiser to cover the price of the conference and a plane ticket. Or just buy a copy of my book, okay?

Congrats on the gig. The conference sounds like loads of fun. Aside from Deutsch, what else ya got going on? French and Spanish as well? I envy all who can use practical languages proficiently. No one wants to speak Old Persian with me.

Right now I’ve got English and a rather loose grip on spoken German. But there was a time when I was near fluent in modern Hebrew (though I never did read very well), and French. And I’ve spoken a passable Spanish in my life. I even had some basic Swedish, once, but admittedly, I was never even close to being able to use it.
