Woot woot! The election is over, the dems have the House AND the Senate, Rumsfeld has stepped down, and the sun is shining in Seattle. It’s not going to last, but while we’re feeling all empowered, it would be good if we could get our agenda in order so that by the time all the Ws have been stolen from the keyboards again, we can get to work.

  1. Repeal the Patriot Act.
  2. Repeal that AWFUL torture act, pausing to smack anyone who signed it, regardless of party affiliation. The president probably doesn’t consider a well deserved smack “torture.”
  3. Pass a national gay marriage bill. Yeah, yeah, the “people” don’t want the ‘mos to marry. Whatever. The people didn’t want blacks or women to have the vote either. Yes, I’m a lefty freak. Your point?
  4. Repeal the Bush tax cuts. We have to pay for stuff or not have it. Do you get it?
  5. Put together a healthcare plan. If the government can insure its elected officials, it can insure the people who voted them in to office.
  6. Raise fuel efficiency standards. Don’t GET me started.
  7. Cancel that stupid border fence.
  8. Create a national strategy for dealing with global warming. It’s the only way Al Gore is going to leave us all alone. Lord knows we’ve had more of him than anyone should be expected to take.
  9. Put together a Marshall Plan for Iraq. We broke it, we bought it.
  10. Plan how we’re going to win the White House in 2008, dammit. You think they’re not planning already? They are, the sneaky bastards. For the love of god, pull it together!

That’s just the first ten. I got a lot more where that came from. If you rest on your laurels and squander your power, I’m coming to Washington to kick your ass myself, Democrats. You’re the legislature, how ’bout legislating something good for a change?

A lot of nice sentiments there, but you need more than sentiment to make the country run.

BTW, let’s be honest, both parties are filled with sneaky bastards.

A lot of things on this list are things that my rep has repeatedly called for and promised optimistic rally attendees. “Give us the gavel, ” he’s said, “and we’ll make them happen.”

Done. Now you hold up your part, Mr. Congresscritter. I agree that we need more than sentiment, we need action. Which is exactly what I am calling for. Like that means anything.

Making Al Gore go is just public service, regardless of party lines. Maybe he could take John Kerry and Howard Dean with him. Oh, and John McCain.

Here’s my fear: none of that will happen in the next two years, other things (like the economy) will start going downhill, the newly elected Democrats will be blamed for this (I think inevitable) downward turn, and then we’ll swing back to a Republican-led government next election.

It’s not like I don’t want most of what you want. It’s that I think we need to understand that even if we don’t get those things, if all the Democrats do is prevent things from getting MUCH worse, even if they can make nothing better, I think we should still cheer for them.

The main thing I got from this election was not “Yay, Democrats!” because I honestly don’t think they can do much, but “Yay, perhaps my fellow countrymen are not as alien as I was starting to suspect.” The result I had hoped for — to hear that people at least gave a damn — I already got.

Yay! Can I also add “yay!” for the defeat of the so-called property rigths initiatives in all but 1 state and for the defeat of the estate tax repeal in WA.

Most of your wishlist will have to wait for a new prez (and well beyond in some items) but I do see hope for some of the environmental items. I think a national consensus is building there which some of the moderate republicans (ala the gubernator) will take on or at least not block.

So…what are the achievable short term goals? Perhaps:
    - Minimum wage increase
    - Start rolling back or at least holding the line or corporate and rich guy tax cuts
    - Fuel efficiency
    - Gays openly serving in the military (this won’t happen under this president but it’s really the first step to your #3 and it’s become a no-brainer in all the rest of the western world.
    - Cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. Would be amazing if we could get the CA plan nationally but first steps to that would be great.

Minimum wage increase is an EXCELLENT addition to my wishlist. Yup. And, I too, am glad to see the mainstreaming of green. When Tony Blair and the Guvernator are both calling for action, well, they’re not exactly wacky liberals.

Woot woot, I say again. I confess that ignorance of the legistlative process, hence the possible unreality of my wishlist. Time to watch “I’m just a bill” again.

Any local wishlist items? I see that the dem wave swept out a bunch of local Republican incumbents.

Locally, the bar is pretty low. I’d settle for a working sewer line, neighbors that don’t yell at each other, and an end to whatever is interfering with my wifi signal. Not so much to ask, I think.
