Snapper and Jerusalem ArtichokesThe CSA sent me Jerusalem artichokes. This is a very odd little vegetable that looks like a little like ginger and tastes a little like an artichoke, only sweeter. The handout that came with the veggies told me to steam them and then pan fry them - I opted for my usual oven roasting solution - adding rosemary and ground pepper to the olive oil in the pan. When they were done, I tossed a couple of chopped leeks and some wine in the pan with the snapper fillets that I’d marinated in lemon juice.

I’d forgotten that snapper plain is just, well, sort of plain. I really should have opted for a very mild sole or something meatier, like halibut steaks. Snapper wants stewing in something and doesn’t have enough flavor to stand alone. I liked the odd little Jerusalem chokes just fine, but I’m not sure I’d go out of my way to have them again as they seem to have disagreed with me. Rather.

The best thing about this Fish Wednesday is that with the husband stateside, I have a companion at the table. He acts all impressed when I throw together Fish Wednesday with little fuss or preparation and it’s handy to have an extra set of hands around the kitchen.

After dinner I hopped in the car to join an handful of cheery uke players at a party where we were the entertainment. We played far too many Xmas songs for my liking, but ’tis the season and hey, when you sign up to play a holiday party at this time of year, whaddaya expect? It was fun to play with a smaller group for a change and we got paid in ginger jam.

Try grating them raw into salads. Yummy.

Did you know that some of spouse’s friends are referring to our storm as “the Blow Job”? Yes, weird friends.
