Lighting Round: Vancouver

Anthropology Museum, Vancouver

“Let’s just go home,” we said. Why? Well, sometimes, the Northwest rain is a little too much. Watching the torrents pour from the sky this morning was gloomy and uninspiring. Saturday had been just fine, but short of some visiting that would have been nice to squeeze in, we’d accomplished our goals. We’d visited Little India, eaten Indian food, and crammed in a shocking amount of sightseeing, some planned, some unplanned.

Our remarkable efficiency was due, I think, to the minimal time it took us to get to the city. There we were, downtown at the hotel, at 9:30 on Saturday morning. Of course we couldn’t check in, people were still sleeping. So we did stuff. Poked around in the sari shops. Went to the University of British Columbia campus to visit the Museum of Anthropology. Ate crepes. Wandered around Kitsalano. Saw the Chinese Garden. Ate dosa in a South Vancouver neighborhood. Drank too much coffee. Bought snacks. We crammed it in for no good reason other than that the weather was cooperating and because we could.

I wasn’t sorry we’d made such short work of the trip and it reminded me of something I often forget: Vancouver is just over THERE. It’s CLOSE. That means when you’re in Vancouver and it’s dumping rain, you really can Just Go Home. So, that’s what we did. I’ll bet it cleared up later in the day.

I added a few pics to my Vancouver stack, here. And though Dead Man was filmed here in Washington, if you like the dreamy look of Northwest Coastal Tribe totem poles, it’s the movie to watch.

  1. Wimp! letting a little rain scare you! No wonder we didn’t see you 🙁 It was quite a deluge that day though. Ick.

Your referenced a made-in-WA movie to watch re Vancouver???! They hardly make any movies in WA and tons and tons in Vancouver (although they’re almost never set here and generallly try and hide the fact that distinguishing features of the city). Anyway, try Everything’s Gone Green if you want a real VANCOUVER movie. Not that you’ll find this in your local US multiplex but maybe it’ll make it to the DVD store.
