Buh-Bye Blue Angels

Dear Capitol Hill,

It’s true, we miss you. We admit it. We miss falling out of bed into the QFC on 15th when we find there’s no milk for our coffee in the morning. We miss dropping by your house to see what you’re making for dinner, not because we want to join you, but because it’s fun to know. We really miss having a Trader Joe’s and honestly, we feel like crap about how much more we have to get in our car (though we are riding our bikes a lot more). We miss seeing you walk past our house on your way to anywhere and we miss that you don’t drop in on us anymore. We accept that we’re on the way to nothing but Lincoln Park now and you don’t get out here very often, no matter how many times you tell us you love Coleman Pool. We miss seeing you sitting in front of Victrola, looking gorgeous in the sunshine. We’re sad about all of that. We’re dealing.

But this weekend, we are going to gloat, just a little. We’re going to say this: In your FACE, Cap Hill! Because you know what we don’t miss, one goddamn bit? We do not miss the Blue Angels buzzing our house, the planes so close that when we look out the window we can flip off the pilots. We don’t miss the heart stopping noise, the militaristic grand standing, the cowering dogs and cats, the palpable tension in the air as our neighbors bunker down for arguments that run the gamut between “This is what it’s like in Bagdad every day” and “This is what freedom sounds like.” We don’t miss that one bit. No sir.

Instead of gritting our teeth through the next three lunch hours, we’re going to wander up to the Junction to eat ice cream. We’re going to sit in the garden and read our book. We’re going to notice a little more air traffic noise than usual, but it will be over there, rather that right over our freakin’ heads. And we’re going to be really, really, really happy about that.

You can come over, if you want.

Love,

Nerd’s Eye View, now in West Seattle.

  1. Pam and i moved off the hill about the same time and I second all she’s says except…….

Having moved to Seward Park, I am leaving my front and back door open today as there is a good chance that the B.A. flight path is through my living room. I’ve tried explaining to my cats the concept of overt displays of military strength as entertainment, but as I don’t get it myself I was not able to convince them. We three are bracing for the onslaught.

P.S. The trader Joe’s in Burien is not too far from either of us.
