Fish Wednesday: “You’re Doing WHAT Now?” Edition

Sockeye and Spinach

I never think twice about the fact that I fuss a bit over my food, push things out of the way in the background, hover over my plate with the lens coated in steam… none of this behavior is cause for second thought. So the fact that the house guest seemed to think this was slightly unusual made me oddly self conscious. “You’re doing what?” she asked. I calmly explained that for a long time now, I’d been cooking and photographing my experiments with seafood and then, writing about them. “Why?” she asked.

Well, dammit, why indeed? Because I am seafood obsessed. Because eating seafood is good for you but it’s easier if your seafood is delicious. And then, there’s the whole problem around the idea that eating seafood might indeed be good for you, but for the fish populations? Not so good. Unless. And so on and so on and so on. Add to that the photographic angle and you have one peculiar human. Living alone – or with an almost absurdly indulgent and unsurprisable spouse – makes you forget that others may find your hobbies a little strange.

The fish du jour, a pound of nice pink sockeye. The marinade, a what’s-in-the-fridge combo of lime chutney, orange juice, olive oil, and Dijon mustard. Fish, meet hot grill. The side, nothing more than steamed spinach. Absolutely painless, simple, fast, and truly delicious. My salmon grilling skills are exponentially better than the first Fish Wednesday. Wow.

There’s lots of fishing going on around my neighborhood lately. When we stepped off the Water Taxi, the pier was covered with fisherman, shoulder to shoulder, casting their lures in to the Sound. If you’ve got a good resource for learning about my neighborhood salmon, I’d love for you to post it in the comments. And in case you think I’m falling down on the job, let me reassure you, it’s a-okay to eat sockeye, yes siree. It was better than a-okay, I’d say it was delicious.
