I’ve got two big pieces of travel related news I’ve been holding on to, but I can’t keep them under my hat any longer.
I’ve booked our trip to Vietnam and Cambodia.
That’s right, we’re going to Angkor-freakin-Wat, people. I have wanted to go to Angkor Wat since the day I laid eyes on pictures of it in my art history textbooks. The travel agent said to me, “So, are you ready to go to Vietnam and Cambodia?” “I have BEEN ready for YEARS now,” I said, “I am done being ready. Now I am GOING.”
We’re off for three weeks at the end of January, and no, it’s not long enough and yes, I know that even though I haven’t been there yet.
I’d really like to hear your advice on travel in this part of the world. I don’t want to know where I should go, I want to be surprised on that front. I’m more interested in the stuff around the edges. You know things like, “Someone will try to feed you ‘x’. It looks disgusting, but you have never had anything more delicious in your life.” Or, “For the love of god, do not forget to bring ‘y’ from home. You will be so happy you have it when ‘z’ happens. Like that. You’re an experienced traveler, you know exactly what I mean. In the comments, please. And thank you. I hope you can’t wait to read about it as much as I can’t wait to write about it.
I ‘ve been offered the opportunity to write a brand new guide book.
That means my name on the cover, that means you’d be able to search Amazon and find me. Apparently, I didn’t screw up the Vancouver BC book I worked on because the company has offered me the opportunity to write and photograph their diversions and destinations guide to…Hawaii. Yes, that means I’d be going to Hawaii, and soon.
I haven’t accepted yet, I’m doing a little homework around logistics and workload first, but wow, it’s a fantasy to even be asked to do such a thing. I’m giddy. Giddy, I tellya. If I knew the Hawaiian word for giddy, I’d use it here.
I happen to know that it would be a tremendous amount of work, a whirlwind tour of the islands with not much time for sitting on the lanai strumming my ukulule after eating grilled ama ama at the hukilau (see what I just did?). But I have such an affection for Hawaii that it would be delightful to just be passing through, to smell the flowers in the air.
How handy. I still have Lunchbox Luau up on the site. Play it, boys.

Pam! Congratulations and congratulations! If you need a personal assistant…

Congrats! Excellent news on both accounts. Looking forward to detailed accounts. You just have to accept the Hawaii job. Second time out will be less stressful, though the Vancouver trip produced such wonderful photos. Do you get to take along your companion again?

That’s fantastic! I can’t wait to see your photos from Vietnam and Cambodia, and only wish I had advice, because that would mean I’ve been there. And congrats on the Hawaii offer–it’s perfect for you. I hope you take it!

Oh, Pam. I would say congrats but you know, I know….
Sigh.
I am still tinged with envy.

Writing a guidebook sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

Angkor Wat has been on my list forever (along with Greece and Machu Picchu), so I look forward to your insights. As for the book? It’s great. It will be a lot of work. It’s great. It will be a lot of work. But you know all that. Hope your publisher is compensating you adequately, because — in case I didn’t mention it — it will be a lot of work.
