It's too late now since you're already in Hawaii, but I recommend the guidebooks (one per major island) with "Revealed" or "Ultimate" in the title (as in, "Ultimate Kauai" or "The Big Island Revealed." Whatever the title, the covers show the island in question photographed from outer space against a sea-blue background. They are smart, snarky and very informative.

I was in Hawaii (Kauai, Molokai, Oahu) in June and posted reports and recommendations on http://travel-babel.blogspot.com and http://culinary-colorado.blogspot.com. Scroll down to "Labels" and click on Hawaii.

Aloha.

While you’re on the island of [Oahu] you must see the [Chinatown Historical District]. And if you have time and are in the [Kapahulu area], you gotta stop at [Irifune] because they have the best damn [Garlic Ahi] you’ll get anywhere.

While you’re on the Big Island you must see Place of Refuge. And if you have time and are in Hawi, you gotta stop at Sushi Rock because they have the best damn sushi rolls you’ll get anywhere.

If you are on Oahu you MUST go to Dukes for breakfast. The last time I was there, four years ago I think, it cost $10.00 and it was money very well spent.
