Neptune the Chicken

On the right, a neighborhood girl and her chicken, Neptune, outside Makeda Coffee in Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood. Neptune is a frizzle bantam. She stayed on her leash, tied up to the bench outside until the girls got their drinks.

I asked one of the owners about pets in the shop. “I think I’d draw the line at a chicken,” he said.

Remindse of when I lived in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. There was a woman who had two pet pigs and she walked them around the blue cobblestoned streets on a leash.

Never heard of it, but I love it! Of course, I’m a vegetarian, so I’d rather see a chicken on a leash instead of a plate ANY day. ;)

    Precious.

My mum lived in Arizona as a child and had a pet rooster called Mr. Hangover. He used to sprint down the road to meet her every day after school. Who knew that chickens make such great companions?

I love the timelessness of this shot. You could have told me that you took it somewhere in the midwest, but with the story I know that guy has a latte in his mug, not a cup of coffee

@debbie: funny. “that guy” is my husband, and the latte is actually not a latte, but a cup of tea. but i love that it’s open to geographic interpretation.

@christina: i had a pet chicken too, mr. meebles, he was oh so loyal, followed me everywhere. why do you think we each had poultry called mr. something?

general also funny? while the chicken was sitting there, the shop owner was setting up a bbq a few feet away. the chicken did not look the least bit nervous.
