Passports with Purpose [Ukulele] Update

December 16, 2008 – 9:33 am | by nerd's eye view

Self Portrait with Black UkeYesterday I made the terrible mistake of saying, on Twitter (what’s Twitter?), that I’d YouTube my solo uke rendition of that great disco anthem,  I Will Survive, if Passports with Purpose hit 4k by Friday morning PST. This morning we’re at just over 3700 dollars, 300 dollars short of international internet humiliation.

This is what’s called a publicity stunt, were I to have any musical skills worth publicizing. You’ll be sorrier than I will, after all, it’s not like I’m any good, only that foolish. You, on the other hand, will be the ones listening. For that, apologies in advance.

It seemed that towards the end of last week we hit a flat spot – the money was coming in regularly and then sort of stalled. We did some more pleading – write a blog post, wouldja? – and sent more emails out – buy a fabulous prize, wouldja? – but it feels, at my desk at least, like I’ve reached the edge of my network. Still, when I review the list of what you can win if you participate, I think, oh, people just don’t know yet.

I’m quite sure that no one is tossing in to hear me play and it’s possible that they’re NOT giving in order to prevent it. You should know that I have terrible stage fright, so if you ever ask me to play for you in person, it will be a mess, though I am not too awful when I play in my living room when no one is watching – it’s the singing in the shower version of showmanship.

We’re really grateful for all the donations and participation we’ve had so far and we’re still confident that we’ll meet our goal of raising 5k. But if it would amuse you, in any way, to have me and my ukulele entertain you by way of thanks, now would be a good time to get your raffle tickets. Or make a donation, that’s very welcome too.

At first I was afraid, I was petrified. I’m just sayin’.

(The pics are over a year old, I’ve cut off my hair since then.)
