Passports with Purpose: A Whole Lotta Llama

Woman with LlamaThere are just about 36 hours left in the Passports with Purpose raffle and wow, are we amazed! We punched through the 6000 dollar mark yesterday. As cofounder Debbie said, “That’s a lot of chicks, ducks, and bees!” I got curious about how many chicks, ducks, or bees, that would be exactly, though I decided to think in llamas because, well, I am irrationally fond of llama. It’s 40 llamas! Or, it’s 50 sheep, a whole freakin’ flock, or, speaking in flocks, it’s 300 flocks of chicks. What I’m saying is this: 6000 makes a BIG difference! How big? Imagine 24 water buffalo standing side by side.

What’s harder to quantify is the difference these gifts will make or the gratitude the four of us feel towards your participation – for buying raffle tickets, sure, but also, for sponsoring prizes and helping us promote the fundraiser. Some people might have been ridiculously giddy at the 4k mark (a-hem) but we’re all over the moon that we’ve been able exceed that by another 2000 dollars.

We’ll be pulling raffle winners on the 30th. I’m excited about notifying winners, but I’m more excited still about seeing those donations transformed into meaningful change. It can be hard, as a traveler, to pass through a place that needs help – we want to do the right thing, but it’s difficult to know how. We’ve all been there: a small child is trying to sell you, for the 100th time, a pack of cheap postcards. You know they need something, but how do you know what that is? And how do you act on that? The answer for us this winter has been to create Passports with Purpose. And whaddaya know? It TOTALLY worked.

Before we put a big bow on this and send it off to Heifer in the name of travelbloggers around the globe, take advantage of the final hours to make a donation or buy a raffle ticket. The raffle closes at midnight on the 29th, so don’t dawdle.

In answer to your most frequently asked question: YES! We are absolutely going to do it again next year! Please keep an eye out for PassportsWithPurpose(dot)Com and stay in touch.

And, as always, many, many thanks.

  1. This is such good news (even if, purely selfishly, it means that I probably now have competition for the wool long underwear. Congratulations! Next year it will be easier, right?

I love the idea of using llamas as a metric, and propose taking it one step further: if you lined up all those llamas nose to tail, how far would they stretch?
