I can't believe having a love/hate relationship with Hawaii. I guess that comes from someone who spent money buying a luxury apartment, new car, got married, paid for that, and then is planning for a baby and can't afford to go to Hawaii. But this did give me some really good food for thought. I will be more aware if/when I end up getting that paradise vacation. Thanks for the thoughts.

I felt the exact same way about Waikiki. Coming from an island myself, it did not impress me that much. I was disappointed.

As a frequent visitor to Oahu, I feel like you took the words right out of my mouth before I even realized they were there. I've never had anyone so succinctly describe this place as it is for us - not quite tourists anymore but still not locals. You nailed the details while still getting the larger issues and implications of our presence. Your writing is strong and I quite enjoyed it.

@lori. I looked it up. It's called, no surprises, Paris Syndrome. Though I suppose it could also be called Culture Shock, no?

@Victoria: Wow, thanks for your kind words. I hope you'll ask me as you get closer to your trip about where to go, what to do, etc... I'm not an expert, but I have my favorites. And I also hope you'll love it because Hawaii, well, it's SO great.

This is really interesting and a refreshing change from the usual travel blog fare. We are visiting Hawaii for the first time ever in November. It's a place I've dreamed of visiting for a good twenty years and I'm aware that expectations and reality may not meet. I don't doubt that I'll find things to love, but the image I have of Hawaii from my 1960's commemorative tile from the Waikiki Hilton probably never existed. Switzerland is one if the few places I've ever visited that lived up to the cliche, in a good way.
