From the Archives: My Imaginary Life in Greenwich Village

I’m in a HomeAway sponsored vacation rental while in NYC. FYI.

I like vacation rentals because they allow me to migrate more easily into the fantasy that the place I’m visiting is actually my home. I can carry a bag of groceries up three flights to my temporary flat. I can have a neighborhood where people live, where bicycles are locked up on back balconies and my window looks not into an impersonal wall of hotel rooms, but into other apartments where dishes pile up on counters and conversations about work leak out into the weird narrow spaces between buildings.… continued…

TBEX Q&A

This weekend is The Travelblog Exchange (TBEX). I’m jetting off to New York where I’ll share a HomeAway sponsored apartment in the East Village, walking distance from the conference site (Thank you, HomeAway!) with fellow bloggers  Lauren Braden of NW Cheap Sleeps and Kelly Goodman of Travellious.

I’m excited about visiting New York again — the last time I was there, everyone I encountered treated me like an old friend who’d been away. Tough looking guys in late night delis, taxi drivers, service people at my hotel, anyone I had cause to talk with approached me with a “Why have you been away so long!?” tone in their voice.… continued…

It’s a good thing to have friends who are as appreciative of the nerdy and obscure as we are. Upon hearing of the magical nerd wonderland that is Bellingham’s American Museum of Radio and Electricity, our recently engaged California pals booked plane tickets to Seattle, a stay at the Nerd’s Eye View hostel, and some space with us for a field trip. No, it’s not all that long ago that we had a terrific weekend there (sponsored by Whatcom County Toursim) but we liked it so well we wanted to go again.… continued…
