Exhausted, Underpaid, and Ecstatic

I spent the last ten days in Alaska on a press trip. The trip was fully funded by Travel Alaska and managed by Thompson and Co PR. There were four media types (including myself) on the trip and two patient, well organized, and — bonus — fun young women from the PR company. They kept us on schedule, well fed, hydrated and safe for the duration of the trip and they made us laugh, often.… continued…

Muir’s Alaska, My Alaska

We were supposed to fly to Kantishna, but the sky was heavy with rain. Too low, too low, with no visibility, we were not allowed to fly. Instead, we drove two hours to the gates of Denali National Park where we boarded a rattling school bus piloted by a guy with a perfect radio announcer voice and 30 plus years of living in and around the park. The seats were hard, the heat was weak, the windows fogged when shut and dripped when slid open just enough to keep the fog away.… continued…

Wrangell - St.Elias Range

Alaskans have a really complicated relationship with their government and they will tell you all about it. Repeatedly and in great detail.

It is possible to eat salmon every day for a week and not get tired of it.

Distance is relative. I’m sure there’s an equation that multiplies road condition by miles divided by weather then multiplied again by the number of moose spotted to determine how long it takes to get somewhere.
