Cold

Little Castle

It was bitter cold this morning, but the light was irresistible. There was a frozen mist hanging just over the surface of the lake and weird foggy clouds in the sky. We got about six inches of new snow yesterday, so when I looked out the window in the morning, everything was covered in sparkles and icing sugar.

I have an epic parka and a pair of Sorel boots. I put on everything and then some and headed over to the lake before I’d had a second cup of coffee. It was dead silent at 8:30 in the morning save for the occasional car out on the main road.  It hurt to breathe such cold air and the tips of my fingers started to complain after about ten minutes. I gave up after 20 minutes, maybe not that long, when my camera felt like a brick of ice and I realized was hungry.

Back at my desk, I looked at the weather report — there was an extreme cold warning issued, it was -8C/17F. It was worth it though, that light was magical.
