Northwest Aurora

aurora

I’ve only seen the Aurora Borealis once. I was flying home from Alaska and I looked out the window of the riveted dual prop plane to see green and yellow ribbons of light dancing in the sky. I still feel like I was imagining it. Given that it was nearly 20 years ago, I’m not surprised that’s how it feels in memory. I’d like to see the aurora again someday — I’ve been up to Alaska half a dozen times, and to the Yukon once in February, and I still haven’t had a second look at it.

It came to us, though, here in the lower 48. My friend Aaron Green went out to Moss Lake in search of dark skies and had fair success at seeing the light show. He posted this glorious photo to Facebook and when I asked if I could share it with you all, he gave the okay. It’s about an hour’s drive to Moss Lake from Seattle but he says it’s not actually a recommended viewing spot, what with the park rangers locking the gates at night.

Hey, getting outside is always an adventure. I’m glad Aaron and friends did, and am grateful he agreed share this beautiful sky with you.
