Stuff I (Mostly) Liked This Week

It’s not my way to respond to a rant about coleslaw; I’m just not that passionate about cabbage salad. But I read this piece shortly after I’d eaten a mind altering BBQ chicken sandwich on a butter horn — “You want slaw on that?”

Yes, yes I did want slaw and good lord, that was a sandwich. Plus, the slaw was super fresh and so good.

[dropcap]B[/dropcap]ut that’s not the big flaw with supermarket chicken. The flaw is that, while the chicken (though perhaps old as Abraham) might taste fine, the condiments will not. Specifically, the coleslaw will not taste like anything approximating food. — The Abomination That Is Bad Coleslaw by Rick Bragg on Time Magazine

The author has a new book out — My Southern Journey — which I haven’t read, so you’re on your own.

This is going to take you a while to read and it’s full of the kind of overthinking and worrying that writers get completely bogged down by — guilty as charged, only without the Fulbright.

[dropcap]I[/dropcap] have not yet found a sense of balance between an online presence that seems increasingly necessary for writers–and that is often fun, supportive, and interesting–and the daily contemplation, sustained concentration, hard work, and critical reading necessary for writers to produce work of lasting value. I vacillate dramatically between one and the other, guilty when I lose too much time online, flitting through minutiae and ephemera, dodging from one hastily read mini-essay to another, and anxious when I spend too much time disconnected, wondering how my work will find its footing and its audience, wondering what’s going on right now in the literary conversation.– Blogged Down by Sarah Menkedick on Vela

When companies send me gear I really want to love it, it bums me out when I don’t. I tested an extended battery case for the iPhone 6 this week, the Spyder PowerShadow and it’s flawed, dang it. It provides a lot of extra juice in not very much space, but it bugs me that I have to carry One More Thing — a headphone jack extender — because the case is designed in such a way that  your standard headphones won’t fit without the extra bit of cable. If they fix this in the next version of this product, I’ll revise my “meh” stance. An extended battery pack is a great thing to have when you’re traveling, I tell you what. Is there one you like? I had a mophie juice pack air for my 4s, that was a swell device.

Alaska Airlines had a massive flash sale and I bought a ticket to Hawaii. I haven’t been to the islands in much too long and man, those were some low fares.  I quadruple checked it with the husband, his take? “Book the damn ticket, already. Have a nice time.”

I don’t just like Hawaii, I freaking love it and I can’t wait to put my feet in the ocean and slurp mango smoothies and go holoholo and talk story with my friends there. Oooooh boy, have I missed Hawaii. A hui hoa, Hawaii. A hui hoa.
