Hey you, yes you. I’m sitting on two lovely contributions to the “No Place Like Home” podcast. I’d still really like to include your audio clip. Questions? Read this and then email me if you’re still not sure what to do.

This American Life is now podcasting.
Ze was just a passing fancy. It’s always been true that just about every single thing I do from the moment I get up in the morning to the time I go to bed at night is a shallow play to get Ira Glass to pay attention to me. My Nerd’s Eye View bird even kinda looks like Ira Glass. Okay, the bird kinda looks like me, too. But that’s just proof… hey, Ira! Over here! Look! No hands!
A-hem. Go get yourself some This American Life. It’s the best thing on the radio, ever. Next to Morning Stories, of course. Sorry, I still don’t have an air date, but I swear I’ll let you know.

It’s not too late to contribute to the next Nerdio podcast, “There’s no place like home.” Interpret that as you like.
Send your wma, wav, or mp3 files to me. Only caveat? I’m looking to keep the segments short, under 5 minutes each. Trust me, that’s loads.
What to do? Tell me a story, record what it sounds like where you are, sing me a song. No need for elaborate production, just send your audio file to pam (at) nerdseyeview (dot) com or ask me for the FTP login and password. It’s already gonna be great, but with you in it, it’s going to be even better. And yes, if can’t do audio, but still want to be in, send text. 600-800 words, max. I’ll read or find a reader.
Know someone who ought to be in this? Send them my way.

Update: This is a recycled post from 2006. The project did happen. It’s called “There’s no place like it” and it’s here.
Hey you disaffected disinclined expatriates, wanna be expatriates, travelers, and non-travelers out there! Hey! Hello!
I’ve been listening to a lot of experimental audio lately. And I’d like to try mixing a little podcast comprised of stories - a little “This Ex-American Life” for you NPR fans.
Here’s the deal - you send me some audio, then I produce and podcast. I’m thinking about something that’s a hybrid of my recent whine and these soundscapes from Brno and, well, who knows. Depends on what you send me.
There’s only one restriction - the file format. I can take mp3, wav, or wma. I’m not yet set up to work with Apple’s proprietary format - my podcasting software doesn’t support Mac files yet. I recorded my audio clips using the mic on my webcam, that’s how unsexy my set up is. If you’ve been wanting to try a little audio but are nervous, this could be the excuse. Need a recorder? Try Audacity - it seems easy and well reviewed and it’s free. You may also have a recorder in your burning software - we use Nero and it includes a full audio recorder and editor. Keep your files simple, please - send me just your voice or song or sounds. I’ll do the production stuff.
Interested? The theme I’d like to work with is - no surprises here - “There’s no place like home.” Plenty of room for interpretation - ironic, sarcastic, totally sincere… Your story doesn’t have to be spoken word - it could be a song or sound or… my plan is to slice and dice - please don’t expect that you’ll hear exactly what you sent in the end result, okay?
Whaddaya say? No, don’t tell me in writing, tell me in audio. Send your clips or questions to pam (at) nerdseyeview (dot) com. Or, if you’ve got a download link, I could pull the audio from there, too.
It could be cool. Or it could totally suck. Or maybe it’s too complicated to even fly. Who knows, it’s an experiment. I’d sure like it if you’d participate.

Note - July 31, 2008: I recorded this piece in October of 2006 when I was really hating expat life. Currently, we’re in Seattle and while my feelings about expat life haven’t changed all that much, I’m not in that place anymore. Heads up, there’s profanity in the audio, you can’t miss it. I thought about pulling this, but it is so of that particular moment that I’ve decided to leave it be.
Tech notes:I’m using the PodPress plug-in for audio, with troubleshooting from ExIT. It seems to work in iTunes when I use mp3 files. You can subscribe to Nerdio (NEV Audio) using the RSS feed. Give it a try.
This audio entry includes music by Julie Andrews, Outkast, Chris Isaak, and Death Cab for Cutie.
When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad
Thanks to Tuckova, who thought I should join Lost in Transit, and Mig, who did not object.

We were sitting with the parents in the lovely garden of the Stift’s Cafe at Klosterneuburg. The place was fairly empty - it was Monday and the museum was closed. The wind was swirling the first brown leaves across the plaza but we were protected by the garden’s walls. The waiter was kind and spoke excellent English and the food wasn’t bad either. We were talking about travel fatigue which right now, I have in spades. (more…)
