Seattle’s Neighbor: Vancouver, Canada

It’s about two and a half hours by car from our house in Seattle to Vancouver, Canada, and three hours to come back again. The difference is due to the border crossing — the lines into the US at Peace Arch are unpredictable and inefficient. There is little to do but sit in your idling vehicle, fussing with the radio and pondering why the line you’re not in is moving so much faster. I love to travel in British Columbia. It’s just up the road from my home in Seattle, but it’s still a whole different country. It’s easy to travel there — there’s no language barrier — but the slight shifts in cultural norms make for some good thinking about what makes up American DNA.

Hitchhiking in Nanaimo

We walked along the shoulder of road and Peter stuck his thumb out. The second or maybe third car pulled over, and picked all three of us up. “Going in to town?” the driver asked, and when we said yes, he told us to climb in. We thanked him for the lift and he told us about the pinks, the salmon that are running right now.… continued…
