What We Ate

Country House, Toledo, Washington: “I want to stop at the EAT, you know the one? Plus, for ages, I have wanted to take a picture of that dilapidated ice cream cone thing. You know?”

If you drive up and down I5 in Washington, you know exactly the place I mean. Well, blinded by hunger, we couldn’t figure out how to get to the EAT, plus, tragically, the ice cream cone is gone. The RV Life

Peter and Kelly are still asleep in their bunks. I’m in the back alcove, it’s almost a real bedroom. Kelly has the fold out couch in the kitchen/living area, and Peter is in the bunk over the cab.

We skipped out on our park stay to get a site with full hookups — after three nights with no power or running water, we needed to dump the loo, charge a staggering assortment of electronic gear, check email, and generally take advantage of the grid.… continued…

Beachcombing in the Gulf Islands

Craggy shoreline, scooped out little coves lined with shells. Sometimes, it’s all smooth pebbles, other times, ground up shells with bits of purple from the mussels. The water has been glassy and green black, the sky gray to blue as the rain cleared out. It’s been quiet, really really quiet, and there’s been a funny sort of hooting early in the morning, in triples, hoot hoot hoot, pause, hoot hoot hoot, pause.… continued…
