There was no town there before the big Hawaiian set up camp not far from the shingle mill where he worked. The loggers were terrified of him on first sight. He was big like the trees out there and truth be told, they were scared of the trees, too, no matter how many they brought down. But whenever they got close to the islander, the fear just left them, his smile was always welcoming and when the pay came in, he’d set up a fire and invite anyone who was passing by to join him for whatever he had available – sometimes it was salmon, sometimes he got lucky and shot an elk.… continued…
“Weren’t you here, like, five minutes ago?`’, the tree said, looking down at me.
“No, no — it’s been ages since we were out here last,” I responded, my neck craned upward.
The tree rustled a little in the wind, I’m pretty sure it was laughing.

Last night on the news, our local TV weather guy stood at Stevens Pass in the dark, a wet snow sticking to his hat. He gave the usual advice – carry chains, snacks and water, blankets or sleeping bags – if you’re crossing the passes because if you get stuck, you may be cold and hungry.
Last weekend we stood at Chinook Pass. It’s 5430 feet – slightly over 1600 meters – in the surprisingly warm air.… continued…
