I go to work in a completely character free office park on the edge of the water &#8211; to get there I have to go over a drawbridge, across a lot of train tracks, between a crowd of semi-trucks in various states of loading and unloading.<\/p>\n<p>And in the water, there are all kinds of things happening too. I watched a 60ish gent pull up in a battered blue van, the kind your drug dealer might drive if you were buying drugs in 1978, not that I would know anything about that. He walked an extremely tiny dog up to the pier and opened the gate to the yacht harbor. There&#8217;s a huge barge piled high with I don&#8217;t know what &#8211; it&#8217;s tied up adjacent to the cement factory. There are dozens of tug boats, sometimes they&#8217;re pulling a load, other times they&#8217;re cruising along solo, sometimes they&#8217;re escorting a container ship to the dock.<\/p>\n<p>Every morning when I cross the bridge I face the Matson liner &#8211; I think she leaves weekly for Honolulu. She&#8217;s empty, she&#8217;s full, she&#8217;s empty, she&#8217;s full, the containers get stacked up like lego bricks, then she&#8217;s gone and back again. I get seasick something terrible, but not a day goes by that I don&#8217;t wish I was on her, sliding across the Pacific to Hawaii.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Duwamish Slough is a big messy place with a lot of interesting industrial activity.
