But oh, I love to travel in BC and the freezing fog made for pretty pictures from the ferry.<\/li>\n<li>February: My mother-in-law and her travel buddy came to town. We took them to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/02\/14\/olympic-peninsula-slide-show\/\">Washington Coast<\/a>, a place I never tire of. In spite of the snow on the ground, we had surprisingly cooperative weather. If I&#8217;m not busy, I will take you out there when you come visit. Which will be soon, I hope.<\/li>\n<li>March: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/30\/a-free-range-human\/\">I quit my job<\/a> (sort of) and went to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/17\/sxsw-that-was-a-very-good-day\/\">Austin, Texas<\/a>, to talk about travelblogging with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sheilascarborough.com\/\">Sheila Scarborough<\/a> at SxSW. It was delightful to hang out with so many great bloggers in person &#8212; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldhum.com\">World Hum<\/a> crew, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tourismkeys.ca\/blog\/\">Todd Lucier<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.concierge.com\/cntraveler\/blogs\/perrinpost\">Wendy Perrin,<\/a> oh so many more.<\/li>\n<li>April:\u00c2\u00a0 After sitting on a panel about blogging (with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nancydbrown.com\/\">Nancy Brown<\/a>) at the Oregon Gov&#8217;s Conference on Tourism, J and I totally screwed up a trip in Oregon, like a couple of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/22\/innocents-abroad\/\">rookies<\/a>. And then, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/29\/to-you-sweetheart-aloha\/\">Waikiki!<\/a> We traveled with friends to Hawaii and learned about aloha, big time.<\/li>\n<li>May: I bought the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/05\/05\/aloha-oe-2\/\">prettiest ukulele<\/a> on the island of Kauai. At Scotty&#8217;s, of course.<\/li>\n<li>June:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/06\/25\/ay-caramba-que-lastima\/\"> I did not go to Cozumel<\/a> and I am still being teased about it.<\/li>\n<li>July: I got into a car with two people I did not know all that well &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/thecareyadventures.com\/blog\/\">Peter Carey<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travellious.com\/\">Kelly Goodman<\/a> &#8212; and went on a drive. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/07\/20\/road-trip-photos\/\">From Seattle to Chicago and back<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelblogexchange.com\/\">TBEX<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogher.com\/announcing-blogher-09-community-keynote-selections\">BlogHer<\/a>. We ate some bacon. Oh, and the trip was aces. Plus, hello new blog friends <a href=\"http:\/\/jenleo.com\/\">Jen Leo<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/jenleo.com\/\">Nomadic Matt<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/everything-everywhere.com\/\">Gary Arndt<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/everything-everywhere.com\/\">Kim Mance<\/a>&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>August: Still on the road, this time with one less companion. Kelly and I drove the Hi-Line in Montana and I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/05\/youre-not-from-around-here\/\">kind of went crazy over it<\/a>. My sister in law came to visit from Austria, too, and I really enjoyed getting to share my home with her.<\/li>\n<li>September: I did not &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/09\/22\/damaged-goods-and-dented-credit-cards\/\">wreck<\/a>&#8221; an RV in the Gulf Islands, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/13\/buy-the-extra-insurance-already\/\">I don&#8217;t care what anyone tells you<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>October: While in Vegas for BlogWorld Expo, I took a photo field trip to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/10\/21\/in-the-neon-boneyard\/\">Neon Boneyard<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.italylogue.com\/\">Jessica Spiegel<\/a>. I got to hang with more great travelbloggy types there &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/reidontravel.blogspot.com\/2009\/12\/76-second-travel-show-robust-christmas.html\">Robert Reid<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shannonlane.com\/\">Shannon Hurst Lane<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.authenticseacoast.com\/\">Authentic Seacoast Doug<\/a>, to name a few.\u00c2\u00a0 And I went back to Hawaii, can you believe it? It was only perfect, all over again, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/10\/31\/two-hawaiis\/\">really got under my skin<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>November: I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/06\/aloha-oe-3\/\">left Waikiki<\/a> with a coconut humuhumu. You have to see it to believe it. Best. Souvenir. Ever. Thanks, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii-aloha.com\/\">Bruce and Yaling Fisher<\/a>, I love that crazy fish.<\/li>\n<li>December: We made a short trip to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/12\/12\/postcard-from-tucson\/\">Tucson<\/a> for a family visit. And I finally made it to Mexico! I had a surprisingly excellent time in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/12\/23\/slideshow-a-long-weekend-in-cancun\/\">Cancun<\/a> because of the people, the people, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2009\/12\/22\/old-stones-and-rusty-languages\/\">the people<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the magical things about this year&#8217;s travels has been the feeling that I had friends wherever I landed. I have never felt less lonely even though I made about half of this year&#8217;s travels alone. That&#8217;s the magic of the web for you right there.<\/p>\n<p>When people learn that I write about travel, they ask the same question: Do you get to travel all the time? I&#8217;m usually dismissive\u00c2\u00a0 &#8212; Oh, not all that much, plus, I don&#8217;t make my living at it, I have a day job, you know! But looking back at 2009, I think I&#8217;m going to have to change my answer. Yes, I do get to travel, a lot, and it is more amazing than I ever could have imagined.<\/p>\n<p>See you out there &#8212; or maybe even here &#8212; in 2010?
