I live a mere two and a half blocks from the supermarket, but that two and a half blocks was quite the hazardous course this afternoon. Our sidewalks are smooth with ice. The parking strips aren’t much better – what snow there is provides little grip. The streets are just as bad, slick and black with leaves frozen solid right into the ice. Why folks insist on driving in these conditions, I have no idea. People, take a day off.

I can be quite content nesting solo in my little Seattle apartment but to truly enjoy it, I need to have the makings of a good meal. It’s just as well I like my food fresh or I’d be stockpiling boxes of mac and cheese mix, logging on to the web, and not getting out much.

I swear to you, it’s not that I’m antisocial, it’s more that I am so very fond of my house that I see little reason to leave it. As proof of my social nature, I’ll tell you again, you are welcome for Fish Wednesday anytime.

It’s cod again this week. The cod was wild and fresh – just like I like my men, yuk yuk. I marinated it in a little dijon mustard, black pepper and white wine. Meanwhile, I roasted some red potatoes and asparagus in olive oil. I took the veggies out and tossed the fish the very hot skillet with the marinade, browning the fish just a tiny bit on the outside. Then, I splashed a little more wine in the pan, and kept an eye on it until it was cooked through. I spooned what was left of the sauce over the fish and cued up the Charlie Brown music. (Last night I watched the classic on TV. I love that cartoon.) My fish was perfect, cooked all the way through but still very moist. And you can’t go wrong with roasted veggies, plus, when it’s effing freezing, it gives you a chance to run the oven.

Being a bachelorette isn’t so bad.

Nerd’s Eye View wonders if shellfish has the same benefits as shell-less fish. Because sometimes, the idea of baby shrimp in garlic on pasta seems like a really good idea. And today at the market, the King crab legs looked really yummy.

Also, while I’m on about food, check out this terrific soup blog, Gracious Bowl.

It’s been bitterly cold here in Seattle, more so than usual.
