As we try to settle in to our new house, we find ourselves oddly short of things we didn’t know we needed. We got rid of our microwave when we remodeled our kitchen<\/a> in the ex-house. We had ceiling lamps and did not need floor lamps. We did not have room for a full size dining table, not to mention more than two chairs.<\/p>\n

To counter the dearth, there’s excess. We find ourselves possessing two refrigerators and a full size stand up freezer. We have a shocking quantity of storage shelving. We are delighted to have a shop vac and a circular saw and a number of angle cut brooms. We’re not sure how we feel about the tools yet, though they do amuse us. We’re confused by the sawed off top of a telephone pole (I’m not joking), by the sheer square footage of mirrors, and by the vast quantities of lace curtains that came with the house.<\/p>\n

Give the tidal nature of goods around here lately (stuff comes in, stuff goes out), we are pleased about the existence of things like Freecycle (the lace is going to the a theater program) and Craig’s List (the mirrors and extra appliances are for sale). We’re also pretty psyched about the upcoming West Seattle Garage Sale Day<\/a>, organized by Megawatt, a cool neighborhood organization we are looking forward to learning more about.<\/p>\n

One of the things Megawatt does is run field trips in our new hood. We missed the one to the Nucor Steel Mill but you can bet we’ll be tagging along next time it comes around. As for the garage sale, well, we are looking for several chairs, a floor lamp or two, a microwave, a lounge chair for the garden…we can hardly wait.<\/p>\n

(Yes, my eagle-eyed readers, that’s a uke in the photo. Any ukes found on garage sale day are fair game.)<\/p>\n
