If you can not lose your heart to a (age appropriate, of course) hula dancer just a little bit, well, you are kind of dead inside. You might want to just stop living.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a nice movie that plays on PBS from time to time about the history of hula, and there&#8217;s a decent write up in the movie synopsis <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/pov\/pov2003\/americanaloha\/about.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And for the love of god, if you&#8217;ve never seen real hula, it&#8217;s time.  The first time I watched the genuine article, in a high school gym under terrible lighting, I was ready to jump the fence and start pitching for the girls team. The repressed puritanical missionaries to the islands must have thought they were going to explode into a million pieces at the sight of those swaying hips. And in case you think it&#8217;s just a girl&#8217;s game, you aint&#8217; seen nothin&#8217; til you&#8217;ve seen the <em>kanes <\/em>(guys) in grass skirts showing you their moves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nerdseyeview\/1165909502\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1076\/1165909502_50ab568da7.jpg\" alt=\"Hula Dancer\" height=\"241\" width=\"334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oh, I&#8217;ve said too much.
