And during that time, Seattle was gripped in an epic &#8212; and <a title=\"The Ice Storm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/22\/the-ice-storm\/\">shockingly beautiful ice storm<\/a>. Also, I debuted with my band, <a title=\"The Castaways \" href=\"http:\/\/thecastawaysband.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Castaways<\/a>, at my favorite local coffee house, <a title=\"C and P Coffee\" href=\"http:\/\/www.candpcoffee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">C&amp;P<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>February: I went to California to attend my uncle&#8217;s memorial. While everyone was very sad about the loss, that sadness was balanced out by the joy of finding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/15\/mallomar-memorial\/\">many awesome cousins<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>March: Our friend Brett joined us on the Washington Coast. It was &#8212; it always is &#8212; breathtaking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a title=\"Sunset, Pacific Beach by Nerd's Eye View, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nerdseyeview\/6954305709\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Sunset, Pacific Beach\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7191\/6954305709_15624c1d85_z.jpg\" width=\"570\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>April: I worked. A lot. I landed a gig at one of Seattle&#8217;s most prestigious organizations. And you know what? It didn&#8217;t go well. It&#8217;s been a while since I have failed so miserably at a project and it was not a good feeling. Failure. It keeps you humble, right?<\/li>\n<li>May: I went to Washington DC with the crew from <a title=\"Gadling\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gadling.com\" target=\"_blank\">Gadling<\/a>, one of the sites I write for. We had a <a title=\"Gadling\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gadling.com\/2012\/05\/27\/an-inside-look-at-the-smithsonians-museum-of-natural-history\/\" target=\"_blank\">backstage tour<\/a> that was, well, Indiana Jones fantasies, anyone?<\/li>\n<li>June: I was invited to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/26\/bienvenue-en-bordeaux\/\">Bordeaux<\/a> to attend the Bordeaux Wine Festival. Ridiculous, right? A piece I wrote about my time there ended up in the <a title=\"Posuer at Fete le Vin\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/default\/article\/Feeling-like-a-poseur-at-the-Fete-le-Vin-4003681.php\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>July: I got on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/28\/a-supposedly-fun-thing-i-think-im-supposed-to-want-to-do-once\/\" target=\"_blank\">mega cruise ship<\/a>. (It&#8217;s okay, I got off again a few hours later.) Have you been on one of those things? They&#8217;re insane.<\/li>\n<li>August: I returned to teach for a second year at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/15\/book-passage-conference-2012-the-wrap\/\" target=\"_blank\">Book Passage<\/a>. This conference is, without question,\u00a0the most inspiring event I&#8217;ve attended as a writer. I love it.<\/li>\n<li>September. We drove around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/18\/a-long-drive-in-central-oregon\/\" target=\"_blank\">central Oregon<\/a> and then, I went to Spain where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/30\/revising-1492\/\" target=\"_blank\">things made me mad<\/a>. Though the three hour gourmet lunches and roof top cocktails with <a title=\"Jessica's Site\" href=\"http:\/\/jessicatravels.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jessica<\/a> and <a title=\"Christine's site\" href=\"http:\/\/missexpatria.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Christine<\/a>? Yeah, that was all right.<\/li>\n<li>October: I traveled solo to Kauai and to San Antonio, Texas. Kauai (and that day out with <a title=\"View from Here\" href=\"http:\/\/www.outrigger.com\/explore\/hawaiian-islands\/view-from-here-blog\" target=\"_blank\">Kim<\/a>) was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/10\/nothing-doing-on-kauai\/\" target=\"_blank\">perfect lethargy<\/a> I&#8217;d expected. And San Antonio, well, I had no idea. I had a <a title=\"Remember the Alamo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/14\/the-ghosts-of-texas-history\/\" target=\"_blank\">tour of the Alamo<\/a> that kind of blew me away and my friend <a title=\"Sheila's site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sheilascarborough.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sheila<\/a> drove over from Austin to join me for lunch and hey, San Antonio is a cool place to visit!<\/li>\n<li>November: I rode my bike a lot and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/16\/pictures-from-the-bike\/\">took a lot of pictures<\/a> while doing so. I worked almost full time on technical projects, more successfully than I had in the spring. Whew.<\/li>\n<li>December: I went for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2012\/12\/04\/walking-in-la\/\">walk around downtown LA<\/a>. My friend <a title=\"The Vacation Gals\" href=\"http:\/\/thevacationgals.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jen <\/a>runs a <a title=\"LACOT\" href=\"http:\/\/losangelesonlinetravel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">travel media gathering<\/a>, and she asked me to come talk about Passports with Purpose, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdseyeview.com\/blog\/2012\/12\/12\/social-media-and-110000-for-clean-water\/\">online fundraiser<\/a> I helped establish. Oh, yeah, we raised 110k for <a title=\"Water\" href=\"http:\/\/water.org\" target=\"_blank\">Water.org<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>January: Eileen came to visit.
