The Joys of Off Season Travel

We’re nice and cozy in Uli’s old house in Grosskarlbach. While we’re not exactly at a tourist crossroads, Grosskarlbach is wine country and if we were here in high season we’d be sharing the road with gourmets and oenophiles. But it’s February and the sky is gray. Tourists are few and far between.

Last night, we ate an outstanding meal at one of those secret Michelin gajillion stars places where we had the paneled dining salon to ourselves. And today when we drove to Heidelberg for a little sightseeing, there was plenty of parking right near the castle.

The weather isn’t the best  — it never is for off season travel, but we’re not complaining. Today it was a whopping 60 degrees. It rained a little, but stopped right after we got out of the car and declined to do so again until we were back on the autobahn.

At breakfast this morning we talked a little bit about the hunt for the secret treasure, the place that no one has been, for the authentic travel experience. Off season travel is a really great way to discover already discovered places.

I am (once again) feeling very fortunate to have friends in far away places.
