Vienna Waits for You

President Bush is scheduled to visit Vienna on the 20-21st of this month and the Austrians are preparing to meet him. This rooftop by the Naschmarkt (“snack” market) is only one part of what the locals have planned for the extremely unpopular leader. Democrats Abroad are also going to be there, along with Cindy Sheehan and other activist organizations.

The organizers state up front that the protests aren’t anti-American, saying that US citizens are paying for the Bush administration’s war politics just like the rest of the world. (My flimsy translation.) The city of Vienna will be pretty much under lock down for the time of the visit, with streets and businesses closed for the duration. Sorry, your kaffeehaus won’t be compensated for loss of income, Herr Ober. (Think WTO, Seattleites.)

I’m sorry I’m not going to be there to stand in solidarity with my compatriots abroad.

  1. My interest in your blog was raised by Clo’s reference to it. This is the second post of yours I read and it made me laugh. I would love to be in Vienna too in solidarity with you and many of your compatriots as well as other compatriotas del mundo en que vivimos.

  2. you compatriots abroad would love to stand in solidarity, except over 300 euro fines for walking, sitting, standing, i dare say even breathing on certain city side walks and/or streets will probably have them all standing far away from the action. nevertheless, i will bring my contribution to the american people suffering by being the butt of all jokes next week at work :). funny how there hasn’t been an american president visit in 20some years, and now that i’m here he’s coming, futher more THIS ONE is coming…

  3. hehe, this also made me laugh .. I feel like going to the Naschmarkt now to check it out except I’m in upper Austria right now … will send my brother there instead .. 😉 I don’t think I’d want to be around anyway when The President comes, traffic must be totally chaotic with all those highways & roads closed.

Anyway, I also wanted to say thanks for the nice reference & mentioning of my blog in your Blogher-post! I wanted to reply right there but couldn’t figure out how to leave a comment.
